We are so excited to welcome Aleks Byrd to Farmer's Daughter Fibers!  Aleks is coming to FDF on her book tour for Traditions Revisited: Modern Estonian Knits.  We will be hosting two classes and a special Stitch and Bitch Wednesday night featuring Aleks Byrd and a wonderful trunk show.

Aleks Byrd is a knitwear designer with roots in Estonia, Canada, and the USA.  She creates modern patterns with a connection to the past using little-known traditional techniques with a fresh twist on them for unique wearable designs that are fun and rewarding to knit for all levels of knitters.  In addition to knitwear design, she works as an illustrator and teaches Estonian knitting techniques around the world.  Her latest book Traditions Revisted - Modern Estonian Knits brings together her designs and teaching as introduction to Estonian knitting, both traditional traditional-inspired.

Roosiminie (Estonian Inlay Knitting) :: 2 PM to 5 PM

Roosimine is an Estonian inlay technique that creates the appearance of embroidery through intentional floats in contrasting yarn on the right side of your knitting. It’s the perfect technique to add some embellishment to your knitting that is easier than intarsia. The name Roosimine translates to “decorating with roses”, which comes from a style of short stitch embroidery done on the Estonian island of Muhu.

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate - Students should be comfortable knitting in the round and reading from charts

MATERIALS:

  • 4mm / US 6 needles for knitting small circumference (Double pointed needles or circular needles for magic loop)

  • Stitch markers

  • Pishkun, Juicy DK, or Craggy Tweed in 2 contrasting colors approx. 20g of each color. Make sure the yarn is easy to pull from both ends of the ball (for working with two strands at a time).
