Morning Honey

A Guide to Hue, History, and Handmade Socks

This Month’s Shade

April's color has a name that says it all: Morning Honey.

Think of the first slant of sunlight through a kitchen window. The way a jar of honey glows when the light hits it just right. The quiet gold of early spring, when everything is waking back up and the world feels a little softer.

That's the feeling we wanted to bottle this month, warmth without edge, brightness without overwhelm. Morning Honey is the kind of yellow that feels like a yes. Optimistic, wearable, and full of light.

In your subscription this month, you’ll find:

Full Skein: Morning Honey, a luminous golden yellow with subtle tonal variation that gives the color real depth

Mini Skein: A monochromatic coordinating 20g mini thoughtfully chosen to complement and highlight the full skein

Why This Base

Highwood Sock is one of our favorites for a reason... it's the kind of base that just works.

The superwash merino gives it a smooth, silky hand with beautiful stitch definition, and enough elasticity to keep your knitting even and satisfying. The nylon brings the durability your socks need to actually live their lives through mornings on cold floors, afternoons in boots, and everything in between.

It's a versatile, reliable base that makes every sock project feel like it was made to last.

The Story Behind Yellow

Yellow is one of the most ancient and complex colors in history, and honestly, it deserves more credit.

Long before synthetic dyes existed, yellow came from the earth itself: ochre from clay, saffron from dried flower stigmas, weld from a humble roadside plant that somehow produced some of the brightest, most lasting yellows the world had ever seen. It was one of the earliest colors used in art and textiles, and it's easy to see why, yellow demands to be noticed.

Across cultures and centuries, yellow has carried enormous meaning. It's been tied to the sun, to royalty, to joy, and to transformation. In many traditions, it's the color of energy and renewal, the color that signals something is beginning.

In textiles, natural yellows were prized but sometimes temperamental, prone to fading in ways that other colors weren't. And yet, dyers kept returning to them. There's something about yellow that's worth the effort.

In a softer tone like Morning Honey, all of that history settles into something quieter,  wearable, comforting, and full of the kind of light that makes you want to cast on something beautiful.

A few things worth knowing about yellow:

  • Golden spider silk has fascinated makers for centuries, as far back as 1709, when François-Xavier Bon attempted to rival the luxurious silks of China. But here’s the wild part: it takes about 23,000 spiders to produce just one ounce (28 grams) of this rare, shimmering fiber. (From mia.org)

  • This stunning cape, made from the silk of 1.2 million rare golden orb-weaver spiders indigenous to Madagascar, took over two years and 6,000+ hours to create. (From mia.org)

  • Yellow is one of the first colors the human eye can detect, this is why it’s commonly used for things like warning signs and high-visibility gear.

  • In color psychology, yellow is often associated with happiness, optimism, warmth, and energy.
