FDF Book Club Presents: Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery

Our latest FDF Book Club pick is Anne of Green Gables by Lucy M. Montgomery. This classic follows Anne Shirley, a red-haired, imaginative orphan who talks too much, feels everything deeply, and makes us love her for it. We dyed up a colorway on Oh Dang! and Foxy Lady that felt true to Avonlea, green fields, PEI light, and a bit of that famous red hair.

Why Anne of Green Gables?

We picked Anne of Green Gables at the end of winter, dreaming of the kind of summer we wanted, dirt roads, apple orchards, a little mischief, and maybe the possibility of romance. There was something about the last grey months of the year that made us crave that kind of warmth, and this book felt like the cure.

Nostalgia played a big part in that choice. This is one of the books that so many of us grew up with, passed down, reread, and then handed straight to the people we love most. For me, Anne has been a companion since childhood, the 1980s miniseries was a go-to whenever I was sick or sad. Something about Anne's spirit always made everything feel a little better. There's something really special about coming back to it as an adult and finding it still holds up. Anne is the same as I remember, and Avonlea still feels like somewhere we all genuinely want to escape to.

Beyond the nostalgia, it's also just a great light read, and the perfect summer book club pick.  It's cozy without being too shallow; it gives us so much to talk about, friendship, identity, belonging, and what it means to find your place in the world.

We are so excited to read this one alongside all of you this summer. Whether this is your first time meeting Anne Shirley or a reunion, we think you're in for something really special.

The Yarn

We dyed the Anne of Green Gables colorway on two of our favorite bases.

Oh Dang! is our 74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Silk lace weight; drapey, soft, and ethereal. It has the kind of beauty that fits right in with the Avonlea aesthetic.

Foxy Lady is our merino fingering weight; reliable, rich in color, and built for use. If Oh Dang! is Anne's imagination, Foxy Lady is her follow-through.

The colorway itself Anne of Green Gables is inspired by the book's landscape: mossy greens, warm golds and creams, plus that unmistakable red-orange of Anne's hair.
