✨The Matchmaker Method ✨

Welcome back, fabulous fiber friend. Today we are diving into one of my favorite ways to bring color and texture to life, the Matchmaker Method!

And if you are wondering how it all comes together, you are in the right place. We are about to turn up the color and your knitting /crochet experience. Think kid in a candy shop and you are free to follow whatever catches your eye.

First Things First: What is the Matchmaker Method?

At the heart of it all is a very good love story between a color-shifting yarn such as  Spincycle’s Dyed in the Wool, a Sport Weight (even leaning toward Fingering Weight), 100% SW American Wool. 200 yards per skein paired with a Mohair yarn or Suri Alpaca such as The Farmer's Daughter Fibers Fuzz (Oh Dang! or Mighty Mo). One gives you those long, slow color shifts, the other wraps it all in a soft, glowy (or matte) halo. Think less “stripe” and more “color story unfolding like a movie.”

Now enter the Fuzz... Mighty Mo (Mohair) or Oh Dang (Suri Alpaca) for your Fuzz option. Here's the difference:

  • Mighty Mo → shiny, glowy, a little extra (70% Kid Mohair, 30% Silk)

  • Oh Dang! → soft, matte, cozy dream (74% Suri Alpaca, 26% Silk)

By holding two yarns together, typically a color-shifting yarn and a soft strand of Fuzz, you create depth, movement, and a beautifully blended fabric. This approach works just as well with full skeins, minis, or thoughtfully chosen pieces from your stash. Think of these fuzzy yarns as your color enhancers and your secret sauce.

The Two Main Ways to Use the Matchmaker Method

1. Ride the Wave (aka knit straight from the ball)

This is your “go with the flow” method.

  • Knit directly from your Dyed in the Wool skein

  • Hold it together with a strand of Fuzz

  • Swap your Fuzz as the colors shift in the main yarn

The result: soft halos, dreamy blending, and effortless color transitions. This is what gives you that “wait… how did they DO that??” finished piece.

2. The Color Curator 🎨 (aka create a color palette)

This is the method we use the most.

  • Hand wind your Dyed in the Wool (color-shifting yarn) into mini balls

  • Separate colors into your own custom palette

  • Pair each section with a coordinating Fuzz

The result: next-level colorwork that looks wildly intentional and completely one of a kind
