Aleks Byrd’s Kindred Knits: Patterns from My Estonian Family Archives is a deeply personal collection inspired by the preserved sketchbooks and handmade treasures of Aleks Byrd’s Estonian grandmother, Hilja. Drawing from these family archives, the book presents 15 patterns that honor heritage while embracing a fresh, contemporary perspective.
The designs span accessories and garments, from socks and hats to sweaters and cardigans—and incorporate a range of techniques such as lace, cables, colorwork, and Roosimine, the traditional Estonian inlay method. Each piece reflects a thoughtful balance of innovation and tradition, celebrating ancestral craftsmanship through modern knitwear.
Aleks Byrd, an illustrator and designer with Estonian, Canadian, and American roots, is widely recognized for reinterpreting and revitalizing Estonian knitting traditions for today’s makers. She has helped bring techniques like Roosimine and Vikkel to an international audience. Kindred Knits follows her debut book, Traditions Revisited, continuing her exploration of cultural memory and craft.
