Morning Star Cowl began as part of our 2021 Celestial Countdown and was a design built to spotlight two of our favorite ways to play with color: a generous stack of mini skeins paired with a single full-size skein, worked together into rings of gradient colorwork around the neck.

The name comes from one of Candice's favorite Blackfeet creation stories, the story of Ii'poyi (Scarface) and Ko'komiki'somm, the Morning Star. It's a story about longing, transformation, and the origin of the Sun Dance, and it felt like the right namesake for a cowl built from dozens of small color changes finding their way into one continuous round. You can read a version of the story on First People here.

Worked in the round from the bottom up, the Morning Star Cowl is an approachable first colorwork project with enough mini skein changes to keep things interesting, without complex shaping to manage. This pattern includes two versions, so you can knit it in either Fingering or DK weight full instructions, yardages, and gauge for both are included in your download. Want to see how it looks in other colorways? Pleasefeel free to visit the projects page on Ravelry here.
