Nestled at the base of Wyoming’s Big Horn Mountains, Mountain Meadow Wool is a family-operated mill dedicated to preserving the rich ranching heritage of the American West. Founded in 2007 by Karen Hostetler, the mill partners with local ranchers to transform Wyoming-grown Merino, Rambouillet, and Targhee wool into premium yarns, blankets, and apparel, all fully crafted in Buffalo, Wyoming.

With a closed-loop, eco-friendly process that uses biodegradable soaps and recycled water, the mill processes over 60,000 lbs of wool annually, supporting sustainable practices and fair pricing for ranchers. Every piece reflects a commitment to tradition, traceability, and quality, reviving a once- threatened industry and honoring the legacy of the region’s Basque sheepherders.

From heirloom blankets to vibrant yarns, Mountain Meadow Wool offers products that are not only beautiful but also deeply connected to the land, the people, and the spirit of the West.

This quarter’s Yarn for Book Club is inspired by The Salt Stones: Seasons of a Shepherds Life by Helen Whybrow.
